Trust the Plumbers Who Know What It Means to Be Midtowners
National Economy Plumbers understand Midtown.
Based in Midtown for Nearly 90 Years
National Economy Plumbers has been operating as a family-run business in Midtown and Cooper Young since 1938. That is to say: we’ve been working on historic Midtown homes since before they were historic!
With leadership that have a combined 100 years of experience and technicians who have been on the job for decades, National Economy Plumbers has knowledge and experience befitting a local institution.
Family Owned and Operated
Our President, Dennis Bailey, and our Vice President, Benjie Sneed, grew up in Cooper Young and in the business. They know their trade and, just as importantly, they know the city in which it operates.
We at National Economy Plumbers pride ourselves on being Memphians and on being Midtowners. We do what we do to preserve the historic character of our local neighborhoods.
Homes in Midtown Are Living History
Midtown homes have a special character. Whether you live in a classic Midtown bungalow, a charming Cooper Young cottage, or a comfortable Evergreen American Foursquare—your home has a lot of character and a lot to love.
We at National Economy Plumbers want to help you preserve this character. With deep front porches, beautiful hardwood floors, and elaborate original molding, these Midtown homes are worth protecting and cherishing.
With That Character Comes Plumbing Vulnerabilities
Homes in Midtown provide historic beauty, but they also contain aging infrastructural vulnerabilities. As a Midtown resident, you may have wondered why your home has repeated plumbing issues. Midtown homes were built with the best materials available at the time:
- Galvanized steel piping
- Cast-iron drain systems
- Clay sewer lines
But times and materials have changed. Galvanized steel corrodes. Cast iron rusts. Clay cracks.
These weaknesses in your home’s plumbing can threaten what you love most about it. We know what you want for your home—to bring its aging plumbing systems into the 21st century while maintaining your home’s 20th century character.
Have Questions? We Have Answers!
What plumbing problems are common in Midtown Memphis homes?
More often than not, these older homes have a very old plumbing piping system and dated fixtures. The older types of metal piping deteriorate over time and become a common repair/replacement project in older homes. Fixtures like faucets and toilets wear from many years of use, requiring upgrades such as rebuilding or replacing.
Can you renovate bathrooms in historic homes?
Yes, most historic homes either have been or will be in need of renovation. These bathroom renovations are sometimes done to modernize the home, and in some cases, they are renovated in a manner to keep the historic period look.
Can you replace old pipes while preserving original bathroom fixtures, plaster walls, and hardwood floors?
Sometimes, but unfortunately, many repairs require gaining access to concealed piping, which requires the removal of fixtures, floors, and walls. Fortunately, the damage can usually be restored to its previous state, and/or an even better appearance.
How do you modernize plumbing while preserving a home’s historic character?
In some cases, a considerable amount of detailed carpentry work and concealment protection is required before demolition work takes place, to remove and preserve all types of trim, cabinetry, and fixtures.
